I would actually suggest a revolver in .357 mag for a new shooter or for someone that doesn't intend on shooting a lot. They are not mechanically complicated, simple to use and you can use .38 ammo for practice.

I already have a .38 snub nose but I don't like how the cylinder dig into my side. Plus I want a reason to get a new gun.[8D] I am looking at either the Kel Tec or PPK/S as a summer carry and will use my Ruger KP 97 as a winter carry. Thanks for all the responces.
