i would say check the trigger control, (XD has a longer stiffer pull then he may be used to) and check the way he holds the gun. I beleive XD's are also set up for a 6 O'clock sighting.

I know when i got mine, i was shooting low too. I just had to adjust my grip and now i am pretty accurate. It shot different then my previous nine.
