i hang it up wind of a trail (not to far away) and hope a buck comes by and stops to wind it.sometimes they go right up to the scent wick but other times, depending on terrain and amout of vegetation there is down wind of the scent wick, they'll just move down wind of it. the scent drag is a good idea. they sometimes fallow it right to your feet. the higher u hang it in the tree usually the farther the scent will carry. i'll bend over saplings and hang wicks 8-10 feet high with a couple chest high. the other day i used scent around a scrape but the buck i saw was like fifty yards down wind on another trail. he winded the scent and went back the way he was coming and that was the last i saw of him. scent will get them to stop but after that they tend to do wierd things sometimes. I hunt public land so i think after a while deer smarten up and don't always believe what they smell! good luck.
