Sorry yall, I havent been out this past week. On the 30th, about midnight I got the call to get to the hospital. My dads sister was at the hospital and they were doing chest compressions trying to bring her back, but it was to no avail. She passed away at the age of 46. She had just had her birthday a few weeks ago. She broke her ankle a few days before and apparently a blood clot broke loose and made its way to her lungs and blocked the artery or whatever in her lungs. So, its been stressful. My appologies, Ill be back out as soon as after Monday.

Well, it seems like the turkeys shut down here in Wisconsin for a few days. My dad's season opened up on Wednesday, and I went out with him the last two mornings. It was nothing like when i went scouting. When I scouted they were gobbling like crazy and strutting out in the fields. This season, we went out two mornings, and did not here one gobble. It was ridiculous. We saw a few hens, but all the toms seemed to have disappeared. This morning we went out until I had to leave to do some college credit testing. Then he went out by himself for a while. He didn't hear any gobbles and was about to give up. In desperation, he called as loud as he could to try and strike up a gobble, and suddenly one gobbled close by. He got his gun up, and by that time he could already see it moving through the brush. He waited until it got into an opening, and then gave it a taste of a 10 gauge magnum. It ended up being 23 pounds, with an 11 inch beard, and 1 1/8 inch spurs. It was a tough season, but it ended good for him. My season is next wednesday, and I can't wait. Hopefully they gobble a little though.

My apologies to my team, since my mother has been sick I haven’t been able to go turkey hunting at all.
And the season ended Sat, May 9, 2009
I really hate it too.
I Hope every one else has a better Turkey Seanon than I have.
Again My apologies to my team, there wasn't any thing I could have done.

That's all right if you didn't get one. That's why they call it "hunting", not "shooting." I wonder how everyone else did who hasn't reported back since they checked in. My season opens in two days. I can't wait, even though the weathermen are predicting thunderstorms and a lot of rain on opening day.

Went out today for opening day. It was raining and windy so not the best conditions. Saw nothing for the first hour. Then I a hen came out into the field on one side of me, and suddenly I noticed two birds out in the field on the other side of me. I left my binoculars in the truck, so I couldn't tell what they were. I called a few times and they slowly started working their way towards me. I was using a pretty boy decoy, and I think when they noticed the decoy, they started picking up speed, and eventually they were running across the field at me. When they got closer I could see the red head, so I knew they were either toms or jakes. When they got about 75 yards out, I could see the beards swinging, so I knew they were toms. I got my gun pointed out the window, so I could shoot when they got up by the decoys, and then waited until they came into sight. I couldn't see them for a while because I was only looking out of a small window, and all of a sudden I heard them putt. The wind was gusting, and it was making the sides of the blind flap in and out a little, and I think the turkeys may have noticed that and gotten spooked. I eventually could see them, but they veered off, and were about 50 yards out. I decided not to take my chances with the shot, and they eventually left the area. I hunted for as long as I could, which was only until 7:30, and then I left. So ended day one of five. Can't wait to get back out tomorrow.

Well, day two ended much the same way as day one....nothing. It was windy again this morning, and I didn't hear a single gobble, which I'm getting used to now. I saw one turkey fly down about 80 yards through the woods, and never saw it again. I also saw two hens out in the field, but that was it. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be calm, and partly cloudy so I'm hoping for some gobbles and some good hunting.

Well, day three and four went about the same as the other days. Not one gobble, and nothing was happening. I saw two hens both days, but all of the turkeys seemed to have disappeared, and I couldn't get then to come in no matter what I tried. My fifth day, today, and last day, I went to hunt some other property that has a lot of turkeys. Finally, after two weeks of hunting between myself and my dad, I heard my first gobble. I had a tom about 75 yards in front of me, and as it got light, that one started gobbling, and there were lots of other gobbles in the distance, but a long ways away on neighboring property. I was feeling pretty good about that turkey, until all of a sudden a hen started yelping. I called and imitated the hen, and as it got lighter, more and more hens started yelping. There must have been around ten hens with that one tom. The hens were calling a lot for this late in the season, and cutting a lot and yelping very loudly. When I would yelp back to the hens, they would start to get very worked up, and they would start cutting like crazy, and the tom was getting pretty fired up. I was set up just over a ridge, so if the turkeys came up onto the ridge, I could shoot. However, they always stayed on the downside of the ridge, and I couldn't see them. I tried everything, from not calling for a long time, to soft yelps, to cutting, to gobbling. Nothing would get them hens and tom to come over the ridge, even though they were just out of sight. Finally, two hens came in, but they left after a little while. Then, all of a sudden, I saw a turkey come over the ridge. It was a jake. I wasn't going to shoot because I wanted to get a shot at that tom, but quickly decided that I'd shoot it since it is the last day of the season, as long as I could be confident that I could get a shot without spooking it and having it run away and take the tom with it. I slowly started to get ready, but then two more hens came over the ridge, so all of the turkeys were within 25 yards of me. I tried to slowly get ready, but I was sitting too close to that side of my blind, and I couldn't get my gun up. I slowly moved back in the blind, and started to raise the gun up, but by that time they had decided that they would go back over the ridge. Even though they hadn't been spooked, I couldn't call them back. I called to the tom for another half hour, and then suddenly it stopped gobbling, and left with the rest of the hens. So, that ended my season. Even though I had an awful first four days of hunting, this last day was a lot of fun, and made up for the other days. Hopefully those of you who still have an open season will have better luck than me, and we'll end up with at least one bird for the team. Good luck everyone. Sorry I couldn't help us out. I did everything I could, but I guess it wasn't enough.
