Obviously found in the western portion of the country, this bird is rather large, growing to over two feet in length, and lives in freshwater lakes most of the year. (It moves to coastal areas in the winter.) This bird looks very similar to the Clark's grebe, but its black hood-like covering extends past its red eyes while the Clark's' doesn't. (Its bill is also a greenish color; the Clark's' is yellow.)
