Surf scoter (melanitta perspicillata)
Sporting rather unique heads and bills, these birds live on the tundra lakes of Alaska and northern Canada for most of the year before wintering along the coasts. They have black heads with white patches and big, sharply cut bills that are red, white and orange with a black spot at the base. (The males have white eyes, too.)
