Their name implies a distinctive collar around the neck, but this feature is hardly visible in the field. What is apparent is these birds' stark black heads, backs and chests and their contrasting gray/white sides. They spend most of their time on the open freshwater lakes of the North before wintering very early in the season along the coasts of the US.
