This is a very distinctive looking bird with its sloping, rust-colored head, big, black bill, red eyes, black chest and white body. They are rather large for a diving duck, growing to over two feet in length, and can be found all over the US and in the western part of Canada. Living most of the year on lakes with lots of vegetation, these birds winter on salt or freshwater lakes.
