I have a area that i want to plant a small plot in this spring but i need to know everything lol, i am going to plant it in a strip long and narrow. ( will replant it that way for next fall ) im just gonna do the throw and grow kinda plat, use a rake and shovel to brake up the surface some and then throw seed on top.
1. should i spray with roundup first to kill weeds and what not? and will the roundup cause my plot not to grow, how long should i wait after i spray roundup before i plant?
2. WHEN is a good time to plant a plot for the spring in central alabama
3. what is good to plant? should i plant a mixture or single plant or what
4.would limited sunlight hurt the growth? should i clear and limbs and whatnot around and over the plot to help it get sunlight?
thanks im im trying too hard to think right now i may add some more questions to this soon, if anyone has anything to add to this that could help me out lemme know, i plan on putting a little lime on the ground before i plant, how long should i wait after i apply lime to plant? or is same day alright ?
Roundup is a post emergent herbacide, you could probably plant the same day you put it out, but a week is plenty of time. I had rather wait three or so weeks after spraying before breaking the ground. It allows time for the dead sour grasses to dry and start breaking down before tilling it under.
I also plant in south Bama. On my plots I overseed the fall planting with Yucci Arrowleaf white clover. It reseeds and is big enough in the early spring for grazing by the deer, then just till it under in the fall when you plant the fall plot and you are ready to go again. I've got a couple of plots that have reseeded for 5 years with a good stand of clover and only one planting. The late winter/early spring clover is available to the stressed bucks after the rut and for the recently bred does. I don't think the spring/summer plot plantings do much good unless you have a good size area to plant. Deer have a lot of natural native plants to eat that are just as high or higher in nutrients as what you plant. Taking a few sacks of triple 13 out and fertilize honeysuckle and briar patches will it is probably be more cost effective than planting a plot.
Low sunlight is definitely bad for most any plants you plant in a plot.
