Jack pines do well in sandy soil prone to drought. They mature fast, but are a short tree and do not look very nice. They are good at spreading. Most pines/spruce/fir will do well in sunny areas. White spruce will keep dense foliage low to the ground in sunny areas. Red pines are a good choice if you are thinking future timber production. White cedar will be eaten by deer in the winter, so will white pine. Most people do not like them, but red cedar is another tree that will do great in an open area.
