I have used buckshot on many occasions; here in VA slugs are prohibited unless specified. 1B, OO and OOO has had success with them all within 50 yds.

It's great to use Slugs if you can, at Quantico Marine Base they don't allow buckshot due to the spread of pattern. ( safety ) would use a slug if I had it my way all the time.

i always tell the story of my first hog when asked what i prefer...my sister and i were walkin' along the fireline, we both had to visit the lil girls room, so i laid my gun down and she picked a bush, lol....i did too, a few feet away , pullin' up my britches, got about half way and she's waving me to stop, i hear it and freeze, she shoots(10-15 yards), it squeals and runs off, at the time i thought you shot , it drops, lol.....it didnt drop.....i run to my gun, run few yards and it's still running, i had to shoot it......thought she wounded it and i couldn't let it suffer.....ended up she got one pellet in the butt.....he almost fell in his tracks, double lung when i shot (30 yards).....if i had known it only had a pellet in it, i probably would have let it run, but i was just startin' to hunt.......finally got to pull my britches all the way up, lol.....turned out to be the best hog hunt i have ever been had....most comical too....to end it, i couldnt get the back open on the bronco, so we shoved this pig behind the drivers seat...my hubby's truck......

since then i have tried buckshot, i only missed one critter, but if it was a slug i wouldnt of......i back the buckshot up with a slug now

I've killed more than 20 deer with buckshot, many with one shot. Within its range about 40 or 50 yards its deadly. Its real good in thick brush or on running shots.

When hunting with buckshot, choke selection is like bullet selection for a rifle. If you use the correct combo, you'll have no problems. But if you use the wrong choke, you'll lose your deer.

Use the fullest choke you can find, and limit shots to 50 yds. There are some specialty chokes in cabelas/bass pro shops that promise 100% patterns at 40 yds with 00Buck. With these, you could probably extend your range to about 75 yds.

Think of each 00Buck pellet as a +p+ 38 spl. That's essentially what it is, having similar caliber, weight, and velocity. It only takes one shot into the heart/lungs to do the trick, and when you put multiple pellets on target, you have a very effective deer gun.

I've had excellent results with my 870 and super X 3" 00Buck (15 pellets).

Many years ago when I hunted with a gun I used an over & under. I liked using both. I used 000 in my modified and the old trusty slug in my regular. I also stepped up to 3" mags. I probablly shouldn't have but never had a problem. I now strickly bow hunt only because there was only 4 deer I killed with my shot gun that I wouldn't have been able to with my bow. The one thing I do miss is the ball of fire coming out of the end as I'm blasting bambi.

Good luck

At close range buckshot is deadly, but i believe it is illegal in most states. I know they are illegal in WV where im from. But with the amazing slugs we have today, slugs are the way to go.
