Why am I so bad at deer hunting?
Hello,
I am possibly the worlds worst deer hunter. I have been hunting other things all my life. Rabbit,Pheasants,Squirrel, Turkey, bear once and coyote. i have been sucessful in all but deer hunting. I can not figure out what I am doing wrong. I sit in a great spot where I see the occasional doe and other small animals(birds, beavers, squirrels, chipmuks, porcupine s)But no bucks. I use scent on occassion. I Just started hunting this year. I am 19 and live in upstate new york which has a solid deer population..Please help.

First question, where about in upstate NY? I live in a place that is very hard hunting, I can go 20 miles south and the hunting gets alot better( the deer population would be atleast triple of where I live). Secound if you can hunt bear then I doubt your problem would be scent. A bear can smell better then a deer, and would be more weary then deer. Another thing alot of the deer are still moving at night right now, it has been worm, there food is still quite plentifull, etc... Give it a couple more weeks when the temp drops and we get a couple of GOOD frost then you' ll see more activity. Most of all, be patient, good things come to those who wait.

Alpha-
You said you sit in a great spot, but only see an occasional doe. Have you scouted other areas? Do you hunt by yourself, or are you getting help/advice from other deer hunters? Every game is different, and you' ll need time to figure it out. You said it yourself - you just started hunting them this year! And you still have a lot of hunting left to do before the end of the season. Hang in there!

i live in the southern tier of new york (Elmira area) and I' ll tell the hunting is tough this year, maybe you need to scout a new spot if you only see a doe once in a while there might not be that much deer activity. your sent is a big thing, you have to be extra carefull with that. i spray my self when i get out of my truck, and when i get to the spot i plan to hunt. always shower with sent free soap, and use a sent free deoderant. keep your hunting clothes in a sent free bag when not in use. H.S sent makes a sent free kit that has everything you need to be sent free.. hunting is all about smelling invisible.. dont give up, stick with it. we need more people hunting...
