think about water (upstream/downstream)
It has nothing to do with whether the wind is at your face or back.
If the wind flows from the deer to you then you are downwind of the deer, if the wind flows from you to the deer you are upwind.
Now where face/back does come into play is mature bucks rarely just walk around with the wind directly at there back. That is about the equivalent of you walking around with your eyes closed.
If you want to see mature bucks you will have to give them a cross or 1/4 wind most of the time.
Its pretty rare that a 3 year old buck that walks around with the wind at his back ever becomes a 4 year old deer unless you control lots of land and choose to let him become a 4 year old.

I think what makes it confusing, at least for me, is explaining it from the position. The hunter's position or the deer's position. How you're explaining it, Rock, is from the deer's position. So I'm assuming that's how you know if you're upwind or downwind from the deer..... by which way the wind is blowing from the deer... correct?

seems incredibly simple to me. I cannot even fathom how one could not understand it
IF I CAN SMELL THE DEER ,I AM DOWN WIND of it.
if the deer can smell me ,it is downwind of me.
less I been eatin beans then the deer ain't safe nowhere.

An older buck
working on a newbie whose tracking deer with a camera and a feeder, can learn to go nocturnal and fool the newbie every time.
I know of a 1000 acre plus deer owner. He marks what deer are unhuntable nocturnal deer.

how about a radical aproach . send the wife and kids into the woods at night while you sleep. then you hunt through the day. deer won't know what the heck is going on.
