Does anyone else use a cathole when hunting? This is using a shallow hole to do your business in and then kick dirt over it, to smother the scent. I even dig a cat hole when setting tree stands and use it if I have to climb down, then cover it immediately. Then dig another for future use a foot away. Why leave any scent drfting around if you don't have to?
When you're setting a stand that you know wont move all season, or use year after year, a ladder stand or a stand built in a tree, you can easily dig a hole a foot or so deep right against your tree and run a $2-$3. piece of grey conduit, or an old garden hose into it and zip tie the upper end to your stand in a handy spot. Bring along a transmission funnel with a cap or some way to close it and top your relief tube with it. You have just installed a urinal/ashtray in your tree. Now leave a cavity at the bottom of your tube, in the bottom of your hole by stacking rocks or sticks or whatever around it so it doesn't plug and can run out and soak in. If you plan to poke cigar butts down it, leave lots of room below the tube for them to build up. You can even leave the hole open to the top of the ground and use a board to cover the top and pile dirt on it to hold the scent down. Any scent that escapes now will be at the top of the tube, high in the tree. Spray some scent blocker into your funnel after you use it and cover the top too. It's cheap, easy and fast to set up, and it may make the difference, of whether or not that big buck comes by. Plus you don't have to pack those gatorade jugs in and out full.
