First buck of 2008-9 down!
I shot a buck over the weekend. He was not as big as I thought he was, but I was still happy with him. The bucks were really cruising both days. I saw a spike, a 6-point, and a 7-point before spotting this buck. He was moving through a thick swamp when I saw him – I only had about 10 feet of visibility. Quartering away always adds about 15 inches to the rack. He was also 200 yards from the stand. It is not the biggest buck I’ve ever shot by far, but it is definitely one of my best shots. I put my binoculars on him for about 2 seconds before hitting the auto-pilot. I don’t remember taking off the safety or the sound of the gun. It took almost two hours to recover him though. He was shot in both lungs, but he ran for about 125 yards before falling in a creek. Only about 4 inches of his hind-quarter was exposed above the surface. He scored right at 110” (G3’s killed me).
