Savage 110 .243, russian sks, and Marlin30-30. Remember that no matter how big of a shoulder cannon you get, shot placement is what matters the most. And make sure that you pick a rifle that is suited for the terrain and conditions that you will typically hunt. My friend uses a .300 ultra mag and has never taken a shot over 50 yards...the only thing it does really well at that range is ruin a lot of meat.

I use a .308. I have not shotor went deer hunting with any gun that I like better. I used to shoot a 7mm Mag, but down in Texas, it's a little overkill for the small bodied deer here.
I use the Winchester Supreme Balistic Silvertips in a 140gr.

a.243 has been my caliber of choice for the last ten years, i just like its versatility. flat shooting, accurate, and plenty big enough for any whitetail. shot placement is a lot more important than caliber size anyway. i have been looking at a 25-06 though, but i'm not sure there's enough difference in the two calibers to justify buying one.

I shot a Winchester 94 A.E. BLACKSHADOW for the last 8 years and have downed alot of deer from under 50 yards to 175+ yards. Why not get the Marlin XLR in the new 308 Marlin Express it is supposed to be good out to 400 yards for deer.

Get a rifle that feels right when you handle it, then select a calibur, I would go for a 6.5x55, or the modern equivalent the .260 rem or the 7-08
