Default Hunter safety education classes - help me out.

Most of you know I teach here in Illinois. We have started covering tree stand safety here a bit most recently and will be going full bore soon. I have a certification class next month.

My question is for other states. Is stand safety covered in your classes? Is it an entire chapter or just part of the safety chapter?

I appreciate your replies.

I took the hunter ed last year, here in Massachusetts. Stand safety was covered. The teacher showed us different type and did a demo climbing up to a tree near the range. There was a big emphasis on safety harnests and the different types.

Matt...I was searching for any books we used for the Bow Hunters Safety Course I took a few years ago here in Missouri and couldn't find it but if memory serves me correctly we didn't get into tree stand safety very in depth...and I know for sure we didn't go outside and go over stand safety and do any climbing. Most of us at the Safety Class had been hunting for several years already with a Bow and have learned about stand safety by reading and personal experience. We did go over shoot placement quiet a bit among other things.

I'll see if I can find my Books in case you ask any other questions later on?

We cover tree stand safety here in Michigan. Perhaps that's because we allow tree stand use during our deer firearm season. Where I teach, too, we teach the combined class which includes the Bow Safety certificate.

In New York in my Bowhunter class they showed a half-hour video. It showed all of the different kinds of stands and how to set them up.

When I took it in Texas it wasnt covered... of course... most people don't hunt out of trees here.

There should have been a "deer blind" safety section... but I don't remember that being there either. I'll have to look into that.

All I was told in MD really was to wear a safety harness with a few of the stats on hunters falling. But that was 10 years ago. I would hope they cover it more thoroughly now.
