Default Western Maryland

I am looking into the Green Ridge and Savage River state forests for possible whitetail rifle hunting this coming fall in western md. Has anyone hunted or scouted any of these huge areas of state forest? The reason for me wanting to hunt out there is to hunt a larger area with some nice size mountians. I am curious if it is worth my time hunting any of these spots and how are the deer #'s in those areas? I have never been there I would basically be hunting it blind, I appreciate any suggestions or help. Thank you.

I used to hunt them, but expect to see hordes of Pittsburgh hunters, 20 to 1 doe to buck ratio. I do hunt some private property south of those. Bow hunting is not so bad, but rifle is miserable.

I hunt in Potomac-Garrett State Forest and have had only a few problems. 1) had a deer stolen. Took the shot, deer went a few hundred yards dragged out by someone else by the time I tracked it and 2) had a two hunters walk in front of me on opening day of gun season last year. It was spoiled by the heat already so really no big deal. Other than that have had very good times on public land. But I would suggest that you try and get up there for some scouting before hunting as there is alot of ground to cover. For the public land, the farther you can get back the better. I try and get at least a mile or two back in the forrest. Alot of hunters won't go that far. Deer are very plentiful. Good Luck!
