Practice.. practice and pratice. It's not the gun didn't make the hunter... A sniper can shot really good with your gun, but you can't shoot really good with the sniper's gun (if you don't practice enought during the year)

308 is a really good caliber. My father is hunting with a 30-06 and me with a 30-30 marlin. This year i want to buy my bow.. and next year, if i can, my 270 (win or WSM)

My next rifle will be a 308 barring a really good deal on something else. I have always used a 30-06 but I really love the light weight to a 308 and the knock down power is great for whitetail which is all I hunt any way.

I have been shooting a .308 win. since I was 13 and want shoot nothing else. I am 30 now and still shoot the same gun a 1962 Winchester model 77 lever action I have only had a couple of deer that was not recovered but that was when I was younger. and made some poor gut shots or something like that. but since I got older and wiser and more patient It will put the smack down on them. The farthest I have had one run In the past 13 yrs. is maybe 75 yrds. best deer gun out there in my opinion.

I have no idea if your particular rifle is a good one or not? .308, from what I have heard from .308 nuts on this site, love it. I am thinking that you are sitting just fine.

Use what you have but become very familar with the gun. When I was your age I was given a Lee Enfield .303 which I still have today. I did most of my practising with an old single shot .22 but when practising I would have the head space as if I was hunting. The money that I would make shooting gophers would go towards buying ammo for the .303. Practise, practise, practise till your gun becomes an extension of you. This will assist you in the fall.

If it's a good fit and the gun is in good shape then by all means use it. However, I find that many times youth hunters try to make due with guns that are just a bit over sized or uncomfortable for them. Good luck and good shootin'

If you are going to use a scope, get a quality scope to begin with. Don't waste your time and money ona cheap scope. The .308 is a great caliber for deer hunting.
