When antlers are in velvet they have blood vessels flowing in them and they are growing fron spring to fall, in fall the blood vessels dry up and they stop growing and they shed there velvet and become polished antlers or hard horned as some say.

Yes it is naturalfor a buck to havevelvet now. The whitetail deer's antlers will fall of in late winter to early spring. After this has happened, new antlers will start to grow with velvet over them (the process is listed above). The antlers will continue to grow into August, then will soon shed off the velvet and become the hard boned antler that we are accustomed to seeing. If a buck has velvet on its antlers past September it either suffered an injury or has some type of disease/abnormality.

LOL! It's funny how much about deer is really misunderstood by so many people but to hear something like that from an ol' timer that actually hunts.... kind of odd??? [&:]
