Niether, I had 8 deer come by my stand during shotgun season a few years ago. I aimed at and took the biggest doe the otheres scattered. Went over there, a 70 yard shot and the fawn was standing next to the doe. I had a hard time getting the fawn to leave. I won't do that again, I'd rather not take a shot.

How big is the fawn. Lot of people, myself included, call a spotted fawn as a fawn and then after they have the solid brown hair (maybe 2 1/2 months old) from then on till they are about grown they are called yearlings. If the fawn is big enough to fend for itself there is no reason not to take the doe, and if it is a young buck then he will probably stay in the area the rest of its life as a doe will runtheir young buck offspring out of the area. Mother nature's way of helping the genetics.

I know what you mean sjs i had the same thing happen to me this past muzz season. There was two does coming down a logging road and i shot the biggest one and she fell right in her tracks and i thought that the other deer ran off,but turns out she was standing maybe 20yds from the doe i shot,it was a yearling so i say it was her momma that i shot. She would not leave either i started field dressing her and she just stood there staring,so i threw some rocks at her to make her leave.
Well I wouldn't be shooting a fawn, and to be honest I would perhaps think twice of shooting the doe if it was so obviously standing next to it's spotted fawn offspring.
depending on the situation. if it was the last day of the season and I had no deer in the freezer, I would take the doe(depending on size of doe and fawn). any other day, neither.
