Whitetail Deer HuntingGain a better understanding of the World's most popular big game animal and the techniques that will help you become a better deer hunter.
I personally would not do so, as I am proud of any deer I harvest. People think that deer hunting, like other pursuits, is a competition, so exagerating is not unexpected.
EGO, thats it. Lets not forget guys posting the weight of a deer. Either they don't weigh it and guess really bad or they have never even weighed an actual animal to even come close to a legit guess.
I've read guys posting of 180 lb does. Like it happens all of the time. Not saying it can't happen, but it surely is not the norm. I often laugh when I read of an animals weight. Its usually rounded to the next 000("the deer weighed 170 lbs.) Why not 167 lbs? Why not 177 lbs? Because it was never weighed, thats why.
I think it's a case of not knowing how to do it properly. I think a lot of times, guys include the tip to tip spread as well. or don't know how to properly measure the tine lenght.
I also think a lot of it comes from watching all the hunting shows on tv and hearing them say, I just passed a 130" deer and you darn well know that buck isn't more than 100".
Or they look at other pictures, which can be deceiving and take a guess
Or when we look at their pictures, they are deceiving and we all think they are overstating.

I know some people do it on purpose but most do not know and think they are making a good guess. We started weighing every deer and taking jaw bones for the state at our club and the weights we thought we were killing went WAY DOWN!!!! At first a deer would come in and someone would say that buck is every bit 200 lbs. and we would weigh it and it would be 175 or so. It was usually about 20 lbs off. Same goes for horns, people do not know and guess way high.
I can't answer the question at hand, but I get a chuckle every time I see a "score this buck" post on this forum. It becomes blatantly obvious that MANY/MOST hunters wouldn't know a 100" from a 175" deer. I am not very good at scoring myself, but I know it.
Well, I don't give a damn about big racks and am clueless when people start talking about scores and measurements. However, as someone who can turn a 3.5 lbs bass into a 5 pounder after a couple of beers, i can understand why it happens[X(]

Because they aren't proud of what they shoot. That's what I don't get. Someone shoots and 75" buck and then they brag about some booner they got. Just be proud of what you shoot fellas.
