Default Still Hunting for Deer

How many of you are successful in still hunting? I just read an article where a hunter kills deer yearly by simply walking etrememly slow and using his eyes. Do any of you hunt like that? He doesn't get to the woods early either..He says that scares the deer. I was thinking about doing both ..sit in my stand for a couple of hours and then stalk / scout. It looks likestill huntingwould be great on wet days.

I tried it a bit here in Oklahoma. On three occasions I could have taken deer, but they were at about 60 yards which is out of my bow range. Its not tht I snuck up on them, I startled all three of them but they did not go very far. They seem curious and wanted to check me out. If only they would have came in to 30 yds to get a better look. If it had been gun season I could have layed the smack down on a beautiful 8 pt. Give it a try, I generally try to stay in my blind, but once the cold gets me im up stalking. best of luck to you

Had it happend once by accident. Rain/wind were getting bad and decided to take a different route back to the truck to scout a spot for the next morning. Enroute I was looking over into a draw I was skirting and saw a deer just standing there, not even paying attention. I put the smackdown on him.

Thanks Harold,
My only hunting is in a WMA...theterrain is mostly palmettoes with huge cypress islands scattered through the fields. My sitting in a stand has not paid off and I thought about scouting / still hunting the interier of the cypress domes. My freezer is already full thanks to a friend so I've got nothing to lose. The deer here are pretty much nocturnal so it's really my only chance. Here is my hiunting area.

The letters written down is where I've either seen or killed deer previously.
I'll be there tomorrow. The map is something I copied off Google. I use Photo paper and teh maps come out real nice. You can edit to make the colors as contrast as you want. It makes real good fishing maps..and best of all they are free.

its called still hunting, take 2 slow steps, wait 6, take 2 wait 6, if you cover more than 400 yds an hour your moving too fast.

Stalking is when you see game and move in closer! Still hunting is when you walk and stop, walk and stop!

To me, stalk hunting is what makes a real hunter. I have only been successful at it a few times. When you see the whitetails flag up, you messed up. Problem with stalk hunting is it requires patienceand a decent amount of land. I mess up regularly, thinking, "I should be over there", and walk to fast. Or I didn't scan the land good enough before moving on. Or I planned a poor route to do my stalking. But I have seen masters at it, who kill upwards of 10 deer a year only stalking. These guys started doing it cause they had back issues and couldn't sit too long.
