Default Overcup acorns

Do deer eat over-cup acorns. All the others seem to be gone or rotten. The overcups are still fresh and very abundant. I think they are a red oak, but they actually taste sweet. Anyone know about this?

My dendrology book says that they are a White Oak, and I feel sure thatdeer will eat them.

If they taste good, they aren't red oak acorns. Red oaks have high amounts of tannic acid and will be really bitter. That's why deer prefer white or burr oaks.

Thanks for the replies. That explains a lot. There are a lot of these left, but I was always told they would not eat them. I'll try setting up near these next time.

deer will not eat over-cup acorns according to a patient of mine with 17 years in forrestry service. He says they are too big and too hard. I find this hard to believe when they can stuff a whole apple in their mouth. As far as too hard, they don't seem that tough.
