Default The season that could have been!

1,300+ miles, 2 States and 1 Buck

This year I was able to rifle hunt both Wisconsin and Michigan for the first time together. My hunt started out in Wisconsin, where I was hunting with my Dad and other family members I don't get to see very often. When I first arrived to camp my hopes were really high that this was going to be the year I would score a big mature buck. With the strapes and rubbs we saw we were very excitied about the chance of seeing one the bucks responisble for the signs. The night before the season opened another guy and I went out and sat in one of the stands and saw 8 deer, all bucks with two of them being nice 8-pointers. So the odds of me getting any sleep that night were very unrealistic but I managed to get a few hours. The next morning started off very slow to our surprise, with the 7 of us huntingonly seeing a combined 9 deer and only one buck( a spike). Like we usually do our mid-morning and early afternoon saw us making may drives on state land around us. With no luck all day it was time to go sit in the stands of the evening hunt. Well, the evening hunt didn't produce any bucks either and we knew tomorrow was another day. The second morning started off slow again but on one of our midday drives someone finally got a buck, it happened to be a nice 8-pointer, one that we had saw the night before opener. With the weather being so unseasonably warm we weren't seeing the movement we would have like to, but on my third day of hunting I finally saw abuck. It was a smaller fork and I figured with the luck we've been having, not knowing if I was going to see anything else and the fact thatI was going to be leaving soon,I took him. Nowwith two deer in camp a third was added later that afternoon and my 2006Wisconsin deer season had come to an end. Now it was time to head toMichigan and hopefullyscore another buck.

Much to my disapointmentmy hunt in Michigan wasn't much better. With unseasonalby record-high temps.the deer movement wasn't happening at all. My first morning out a saw three small does and it would be another7 daysuntilI saw anything else. The weather wasn'tin my favor at all, after thefirst two dayswere it was kind of cold in the morning, I saw a average morning temp. of over 45 degrees. While, it seemed the guys back at camp in Wisconsin were seeing the same results too, no bucks at all. The remaining 4 guys in camp in WI all went home empty handed and I hoped to not go home empty handed in MI. The finally day of season came around and I was very optimistic that today would be my day, the weather was finally in my favor with a big storm rolling in. That morning I saw the 3 small doe again and that would be all I saw. I went home empty handed.

Although I didn't get a deer in Michigan I did take a buck in Wisconsin which wasn't huge but did put meat on the table. With the season now complete I can start getting ready for next year, andI will be going on my first ever bow hunt as well.

I'm trying to post the picture of the deer, I'll work on it
