Whitetail Deer HuntingGain a better understanding of the World's most popular big game animal and the techniques that will help you become a better deer hunter.
I hunt ina relativly thick cover my shots don't ever go over 50 yards and i have a new 300 win mag that i would like to use but is it the wise choice over a .308?
Ditto.....I bow hunt nearly all year because rarely do I ever have a shot long enough to warrent a rifle. That, and high power rifles are illegal in Indiana.
I use a .300 win mag. I do not like having to worry about having enough knockdown power. I have hunted with 30/30 an 30/06 also. I prefer the .300 to either of those mentione above. It is a personal preference.
Both use the same diameter .308 bullet the only difference is the speed of which they are tossed and the energy they deliver on target. Obviously the large capacity case of the 300 WM is the big winner in this department. I don't see a problem with using the 300 wm for deer, just pick bullet that is designed for controlled expansion due to the high MV with the close shots. Nosler Partitons, Barnes TSX, etc come to mind. Also i'd lean towards the 180 gr versions, the only exception would be the TSX where lighter isn't a problem with a solid copper bullet.
I would use the 300 in the thick brush with a heavy load, say a 180 grain that way you can shoot through the brush much easier. I've found that heavier loads go through the brush much better. Try to use a solid core bullet that won't explode too much, otherwise the brush might have more of an impact on your bullet..

Myth no such thing as bush beater bullets or calibers!
