Do deer screech?
 

Several times when walking through the woods (heading to a spot) I've heard 1,2, or 3 loud noises. A screech? A scream? It always seems low to the ground (not like a bird in a tree) and it sounds like no bird I've ever heard. Once I heard the screech and saw a deer running away, but most of the time I hear it and never see anything (usually because it's night when I'm coming into my stand). What's up?

Or... It could be a Bobcat, I have heard these large cats make this sound and is does sound like terrible scream. Bigfoot makes this noise too, so some say.

I have also heard this freaky scream and seen deer and other animals haul butt? Who knows until you see what's making the noise.

It could also be a screech owl. We used to have a family of them that would sit on a grape vine trellace in our backyard. They truly make a screeching sound.

Ahhhhhh. I have heard owls in the area (the hooting kind). I hope that's what it is. The DEC is releasing cougars/panthers/whatever in the area too. Gee, I hope that's not what it is. I'm not going to feel so good about trapesing through the woods in the dark if some big cat is going to, in the words of Pooh, &quot;Drop on me.&quot; Anyway, &quot;Go Cubs, Sven&quot; (old Cub Fan from Zion, Illinois).

You described it as a screem. We have some big cats in the back canyons that make a screem. It will make the hair from your toes all the way up to your head stand on end.

One other possibility; a Great Horned Owl. I walked under a tall tree while hunting and one let out the most blood curdling scream right above me that almost caused me to have an accident, which would have ended my hunt for the day. It was like someone scraping a blackboard. They can do more than just hoot!

Let me enlighten you. Deer do screech and let me tell you...It is a god awful noise. The first time I ever heard it I was sure there was something out there I didn't want to meet. We call it the chupacabra noise. Type &quot;Chupacabra&quot; into a search engine to see what it is. Deer make a variety of noises. They make all the typical noises that all us hunters are familiar with from magazines and T.V. and the market. Then there are the noises that are know to only those that spend plenty of time in the woods. Us Bow Hunters. We see deer in the strangest situations, doing the strangest things and especially making the oddest sounds. My experience its mostly been does who scream at me.
