I agree with cowboy. Here's what my 30 years deer hunting experience tells me. Fresh human urine, like the kind falling to the ground from the human will scare the hell out of deer if they are downwind and in the vicinity. I've witnessed this more than once. However, human urine on the ground after a certain period of time does not scare deer, in fact it seems to attract the bucks and make them go into the scrape mode. I don't know if it takes a few hours or a few days to lose whatever it is to scare the deer but I know it does.

First time that I have ever heard this but here is an experience that I had that I thought was a fluke. I stopped to pee on my way to the stand one afternoon. Some deer that were bedded nearby got up and came running toward me. I could see their legs through the think undercover. I circled downwind from them and managed to harvest one. I don't know if it was the sound or the smell, but they were checking me out.

can whitetails distinguish human urine from other types?
Can they tell it is not DEER urine?
Who knows for sure? We now know/believe that they use scents to tell each other apart but do they have the ability to actually SORT all of the types of urine they must smell every single day into certain catagories?? I doubt it. Wouldn't they be running away ALL the time from all the predator urine they must come across?? Seems to me you'de have some seriously tired deer!! We've come along way in understanding deer behavior but we will never ever fully understand what they're thinking.

Will peeing in the woods spook off deer?
From everything I've read and from my own experiences, I say absolutely not so long as the deer doesn't bust you in the act. They're probably more startled by just seeing your movement and catching your human scent if they caught you going. Last year I went right off my stand and had a deer sniffing the spot a half an hour later. That deer never once acted spooked by the smell. Your biggest risk from going off your stand is causing the deer to hang around longer, increasing their odds for catching your human scent.

Also, even if you "teach" ONE deer to associate human urine to danger, it in NO WAY mean ALL the deer in your area now possess this knowledge!! They're not the BORG!! Just like spooking one while walking to your stand...it doesn't necessarily mean the whole day is shot.

Cowboy
I am taking in lots of fluid and I'm gonna hose the place down. This has been one interesting (and entertaining) thread. Headed up to the mountains now, have a good weekend everyone. Hopefully I will find the pi$$ed off deer!

Good question, and some different answers. Last year I took a deer that walk right upto the tree I relived my self near and smelled it, rather than going twords the sent bomb I had place in the oppisite direction about 50yrd. away?

Who really know's. I used to think that you relieving your self while hunting would be risky, but after last year I wonder if it really matters.

Good luck with your fluid intake Rod!lol Hey it's worth a shot. Let us know how your experiment goes. Oh and if your urine scares off that 150 class buck you're after.....I'll deny every word I've said on this topic.

Bill, I've only read two of your posts so far and both of them had me rolling on the ground laughing! The mental picture of you standing there watching that buck is classic!!!
