No i dont think so. For bears it is perfect plenty of take down power on a bear. For deer you will be able to make long range shots with it and you should have no problem with a deer ever walking away after a shot from it.

i shot a spike with one this year. last day of the season and i rushed a little and i was standing(yes im ashamed) hit it a little further back than wanted still managed to nip a lung. the deer stillfell like nothing ive ever heard or seen before. it was like one of those huge pines just crashed. another time i was hleping a buddy track a wounded deer it happened to pop up about 10 yds in front of me. it left a massive hole in the entry and exit. (2 fists out the exit ) but that was the only time ive ever seen excessive damage from the 300 mag. so if u keep your shots outside ten yards i think you'll be good btw i use 180 corelokts.

I have one, and hobie's right, they don't go far when hit with this one. shot a nice doe in kansas several years back at 250+ yds. dropped it it's tracks. I use 160 grain winchesters, zeroedin at 250, the only thing I don't like about the gun is it's bark, I have a muzzle break on mine, and It definetly makes your ears ring for a while. I'm looking at getting one of those game ears, that protect your ears during the shot. Other than that, it's a nice gun, and really reaches out there.

Darn, between this thread, and the talk I've been hearing from the big game guys, the 300mag is a real sweet, versatile gun. I was checking some of them out at Gander Mountain a little while ago. My Visa card almost got a workout...

deer don't go far with a hit from a 7mm. even more, they won't go far if you place your shot perfect. I know many of ppl that hunt deer with a .243 and most hav dropped in their tracks, right where they shot'em. either way, a 300 is a massive cannon gun. and I bet the shells are expensive, I know a box of 7mm are 20+ dollars for just a box of 20rnds. I wish I would have bought a 243, cheaper ammo, more fun to shoot and gets the job done. Using the best bullet for each gun, by best I am guessing the one that shoots the best out of all other brands/grains. A 7mm wby mag has a muzzle velo of 3070 and a muzzle energy of 3662.
300 mag, has a mv of 2905 and a me of 4122. But after 500 yards teh 7mm is still holding strong with Mz energy and the 300 has dropped drastically. either way, both will kill deer.
I'd like to get a 300 short mag but I don't think any gun will ever replace my 7mm. She's sweet. and Like the plague.........deadly. As ted nugent said, the best type of gun for deer a a shotgun loaded with slugs.
Well, if you want to spend the money on shells, go for it. I know I hate having to buy shells for my 7mm. It just makes my stomach turn everytime I go to the counter to pay. I really am thinking of getting me a 243 for next year. 10 dollars for a box of shells.
