Default HOW SMART ARE DEER?

Has any one els experienced this with in there camp area?

To start our hunting land which is about twelve hunderd acres and is joined to other vast amounts of land in Ga.

During the year when scouting I always tend to see the same deer in the same general areas, further inland from our camp site.

however, I have noticed some of these deer coming close to camp during season, accually staying close to camp and the general area as if they know it's the last place we will hunt.

One a few occations I've spotted different bucks bedding 75yrs from the camp. It's like thier watching us.

Noticing this, I placed my stand very close to the camp site in a area where I noticed activity, and you would know I took a good deer, a deer seen on many occations ways away from the camp.

It almost seemed to easy. There were infact more around esspecially a very big one whom seems to be out smarting us, for many years.

I re-placed my stand any way, after a few of the camp members figured it would be a waste of time.

Has any other member noticed this factor or have any input.<font face='Georgia'></font id='Georgia'><font color=red></font id=red>

If your group don't hunt the area next to camp it sounds like the deer have patterned you . They will go where they aren't disturbed .

Grouse,

Do you really think they dont have some level of smarts? I understand that the deer are cerious, but on the food issue I don't think they come to the camp for food.

These deer really seem to be using thier heads. Halcon made a good point, but the camp is full of activity and it would seem that this would disrupt the deer in regards to that matter. But no it isn't hunted being that the procimity is so close, and that my point are particular deer using this to there advantage, the more wise and older 12pt 205lb monster bucks.

Don't get me wrong it not like we have deer hanging all around the camp sight sitting around the fire with us, but on occation that really big one will be seen with in less than a 1/4 mile of the came and spooked up some times bedding VERY close to the camp.

Thank you for your input.

jred, I have a buddy who told me once about a hunting trip that he had that is related to what you spoke of. He was hunting with a group of three or four and one of them became ill and stayed at the camp , too sick to go out that day. Just after daybreak they heard a shot from the general directon of the camp , when they returned for lunch they learned that their sick friend stepped out onto the porch to relieve himself , and happened to look up and see an eight point buck standing there. He eased his rifle from beside the door , raised it to his shoulder , and fired. It dropped dead within 30 yards of the cabin door. I think they're pretty smart, how many more have gotten away with it over the years ?

They are smart, it has often been stated that the last remaining animals on earth would be Whitetail deer and wolf. One reason is smart, the other is adaptability. This what they did to you adapted to your pressure and movement then moved where you least expect them to be. I have countless stories I could tell how a deer we had pegged did the old vanishing trick when season rolled around. Like my good buddy and outfitter says they make one mistake in a lifetime, the trick is to be their when it happens and always be ready cause it will happen when you least expect it! They don't get big by being stupid!

All of you bring up valid points about being in places that they normally wouldnt be but what bout times...sometimes it seems to me that i see more deer during the hours of 12 in the after noon to 3 p.m. then when i hunt in the morning and afternoon hours. We thought we were patterening them but are they really patterening us?

Welcome Lonebuck, I think this another good & often overlooked time or point. During the rut this my must be in the woods time for sure on my days in the field. I have and know of many big bucks killed between 10-3.
