I'm very new to hunting and my son wants to go out the first day of deer season. He has completedhis hunter/trapper safety class and now want to hit the woods. I would like to get some inputfrom youas far as what I must take along. We will be hiking in about 1 mile to where we have picked our spot.

Thanks in advance for your input.

First of all, welcome to the best hunting site of the web, and welcome to the sport of hunting! You can learn a lot here, also videos, and magazines can help get you started too!
Beyond that, you've asked a vague question! I'd need a few more specifics to be of much help. Stand hunting, still hunting, ground blind?
You mention a 1 mile hike, what terrain?
For hiking, you'd need most of the same things for hunting that you might need for regular hiking. Especially a compass, flashlight, water, snacks!
If your weather changes like ours does here, be prepared for rain, and cold! Nothing ends a hunt faster than being wet, and/or cold!
As for the hunting, a good pair of binoculars, good camo, what ever scents you use (cover and attractants,) and you'll be good to go!
Good luck!

carry things to stay warm, maybe a little snack to eat later. don't worry about ammo, if u use a pump the tube full of rounds is plenty. since your hiking in try to keep the carrying light. layer your clothing, i usually walkto my spot with my outer jacket off so as to not sweat to much. then when i get towere I'm going i just put my jacket on. if it's really thick or u can't see beyond fifty yards i usually don't bring binos. but if u got some air betweenu and the ground or the area u plan to sit is open, binos are great. i sometimes bring in my coat pockets another pair of socks just in case, my feet sweat so i like to change them when i get to stand. boy u got me excited, going out with the boy, thats great. i went out last year with my little cousin during bow season. we had a great time sitting on a log farting and giggling. didn't see any deer but it was still fun.hope u see something and welcome to the forum bro.

Rob welcome to the forum ... I think if I had a mile to hike the frist thing I would consider getting is a 4 wheeler ;&gt) ..dragging a deer a mile would be a REAL groove killer ..

Don't forget to take some TP as well. Getting back to nature and going like a bear in the woods is all fine and dandy until you have nothing to wipe with.

The number one thing to do is have fun. For your son's first trip out, an enjoyable experience is the primary objective and harvesting a deer is secondary. He will appreciate the outdoors more and become a hunter for life if he truly has a good time. Taking my younger brother out for the first time was a challenge because he wanted to walk the whole time, as opposed to sitting in a treestand. We ended up sitting on the ground, backs to trees, and moving every hour or so. He's never killed a wallhanger, but he hunts to this day. Good luck to both of you and let us know how it turns out.
