Why does everyone look down on PA?

I think they have better soil out there. Something to do with the Mississippi River and the silt or something like that.
In all seriousness, it does require a lot of lime and fertilizer to grow stuff in our neck of NE Penna.

For deer - no semi-autos or Sunday hunting.
Semi-auto shotguns are allowed, but not rifles. Plugged to 3 shells capacity.
On Sunday, you can hunt crow, fox and coyote. Nothing else.
But hey, you're not allowed to go clamming on Sundays in NJ. That's even weirder.

Semi auto shotguns are allowed in the special regulations areas in the southeast part of the state. People who have lost the total use of one hand or arm may use a semi auto rifle for deer, a little known law.

Agreed. Soil is huge. But seeing what age can do to our bucks has made me a believer that this is the most important factor in that three part equation. Genetics vary from deer to deer so I think you can have runts and giants in every state. The nutrition is the one thing you guys will always have the leg up on.
But, we can work on our local deer. Growing plots with high nutritious plants, mineral supplements, winter feeding, etc.... You do what you can. And some deer are just freaks. Every now and then you see a 200+ inch buck and say, "how did that deer come outta there????".

Its still hard to substitute dirt that will do it naturally on its own though.

Actually Rock, Pa has some damn fine farmland and dirt in a LOT of areas. The main reasons behind the generally smaller body size of the past was poor conservation practices leading to horrible habitat to population numbers. Not to mention the "if it's brown it's down" mentality and the lazy stump "hunters" <--(note the quotations) and basically just plain old stupidity abounding among the hunting community. While OT and I often argue about the aggressiveness of the deer reduction program in several areas I hunted up in Northern Pa, the overall state population of deer were really helped and seem MUCH healthier now. Larger bodies, bigger racks, just over all good looking deer are coming back. They have always had good quality, high nutrition browse, just not enough to feed the out of control population.
