Default Sacramento Airport / UAL and checked firearm

Hi there,

It has been a few years since I've traveled back to my family's farm in South Daktoa for pheasant hunting. I'm hoping to go this Fall, but the airline rules are really unclear about whether I am allowed to check a locked shotgun case as a regular piece of luggage or if I will have to pay $175 as the case is more than 62 linear inches (length + width + height). I called United on the phone and after 15 minutes of asking around the agent concluded, yes, you'll have to pay although the policies were very unclear. Seems strange to me as I spent a few minutes on cabelas.com and didn't see any rifle case less than 62 linear inches??????

Anyone else have experience flying out of Sacramento with a rifle case?

Thanks.
