RE: how many pellets make a good pattern?
I have no experince with #1' s or #3' s, but I have a lot of experience with trap, sporting clays, dove, pheasant, and things like that. Well, in patterning a trap load with 1 1/8 ounce of #8 shot at 1200 fps from 40 yards, a good percentage of pellets within a 30" circle would be 60%. I use modified choke for that pattern too by the way. Those are also factory loads. There are some many factors that could affect a pattern that it is difficult to know where to begin. Just take a look at the pattern of every shell you try out on your " mallard" target, and use whichever load you think looks like it would knock the birds down the best. Good luck!
