Default Help: looking into duck hunting, what do i need?

alright,i need some help. i avidly hunt deer and turkey,as well as small game and some pheasant on the side. I am seriously thinking about taking up duck hunting. i am only 13, but i have a friend who does it and i could go with him till i get good at it. What will i need as far as clothes, ammo, choke tubes, possibly decoys( in the long run), and calls? BTW,i already have a Remington 870 12 gauge,it handles up to 3" mags.

What you will need depends on the type of water you'll be hunting. If you're hunting an area where you can safely wade to retrieve all you birds you won't need a boat ,but otherwise you will. A boat doesn't have to be exspensive but if a boat is required make sure it will be safe for the water you're hunting. So after a boat come life jackets, saftey first. Waders hips or chest again it depends on where you're hunting.Clothes a good camo that you can layer ,late season I like the floatation jackets they are toasty warm and one can do away with having to bring the life jacket.Odds are you already have some good clothes for waterfowling from you other hunting activities.
As far as shooting you're 870 has it covered. A mod or I.C. are good choices in chokes , pattern you shotgun with various types of ammo you'd like to shoot and see which works best out of you gun. Decoys either buy G&H or the Herter style ,stay away from carry lite and Flambeau. Try finding a local waterfowl club or get in touch with Ducks Unlimited. It takes time to learn but the rewards are great.

I can't really tell you everything you need to get, as my message would go on forever. However, since you are starting out, the two things I think you will benifit the most from are a good pair of neoprene waders and decoys. Waders are going to save your legs time and time again. I have pair of 3mm Ducks Unlimited. I love them. And decoys. Get as much as you can. Ducks that fly in are likely to land where they see a lot of other ducks. It puts them more at ease.

I think you will need a call this should be the most important item next to your gun a good call blown by a good caller will darn near replace your decoys. you say you turkey hunt so you understand the importance of calling. good luck and practice till perfect. just about any decent call will work would recommend single reed. but that is up to you whichever you can blow easily and more impotantly accurately
