RE: need help with teal decoys
You don't need teal decoys to kill teal. They will come in to just about any sort of duck spread. Moreover, they are very small, and I wonder how well the ducks can see them. But it does offer decent contrast and realism... so it can't hurt.
I have a dozen G&H teal I was given. I will throw them out occasionally, and crowkilla gave good advice. What he is talking about is you should have your decoys put out in small groups... not just one large mass. Ducks this time of year are typically starting to pair up for breeding. You will usually see pairs, or groups of four, or two drakes following one hen (Competition). When the ducks are in large groups (20 plus), they are still just made up of small groups doing their own thing. Just like big groups of geese are broken up in the smaller family groups).
Teal, quite often, with not fly with mallards. There are occasionally single mixed in, but its not uncommon to see a black, sprig, grey duck or baldplate with mallards. When they all sit together, teal are usually found either out in the open or right on the edge of the cover. Crow is recommending (correctly in my experience) that you put your teal close to the main "hole" in your spread where you are intending the birds to land. Near that, naturally if you are mallard hunting, you will have a group of (in my case) about 6 to 10 mallards. I throw sprigs and blacks in sporratically, and also have small groups or pairs of mallards as "cut-off" birds. Teal make good cut off birds as well and can help keep birds from landing wide.
