What are they still doing around?

I was driving back from ice fishing this afternoon and I saw a flock of mallards!! In west central MN!! Dec. 31st. there's somthing wrong with that. I have never seen ducks around here this late in the year. The worst part is it's been really cold the last week or so and the only open water anywhere in the area is on the power plant down by Big Stone City SD about 40 miles form here. Just thought I'd let everyone know.

I was just informed that over by Sauk Center in Central MN the Sauk River is still open and the mallards are stock piled up on that also.

Ducks can stick around as long as they have open water and a source of food. I've seen ducks as late as in early December in my area.

The odd thing is that there hasn't been a flock of ducks around here for over a month. Then all of a sudden they show up.
