Default I thought geese fly MORE when it's cold???

Went out this morning in about 10 degree temperatures, and had the worst outing of about 8 or 9 this year. We saw a few flocks, with only one that gave us a look. I thought they fly more when it gets cold because they have to eat more to keep warm. We suspect that when it gets too cold they don't fly, and that, given our observations this year, theoptimum temperature range is probably between 25 to 45 or so. Any comments on this?

Yes they have to eat more when its cold, which means they spend more time on the ground feeding and less time flying. It depends where they are feeding, and their proximity to open water. Lots of factors.

The cold might have pushed the geese out of your area, and the few flocks you saw were trying to get south

We had a cold week in manitoba when it snowed and dropped to -5 celcius. We shot our limits everyday of that week. But it did kick alot of birds from our area. It kicked even more from up north straight to us!!!

Went out this morning (last day of the season) when temps were 30 to mid 40s. We saw a lot flying, but being a bluebird day (sunny with no clouds), they were flying high and none came in or gave us a serious look.

All I know about Geese is they are like a woman you never know what they are going to do, just as soon as I think I have them figured out they do the opposite.

Went out yesterday AM in single digit temps. with high wind. Didn't see one bird in the air all morning. We knew right where they were, but they didn't want to get up off what little open water was left aroundhere. Got up in the morning with high hopes, but only came home with a little snot froze to our faces.

geese are lazy... they will wait till its as warm as its gonna get before they fly in the morning. when its that cold, they will eat more, but that doesnt always mean that they will fly more. if they have a good field with plenty of food, there is no reason for them to waste energy flying around.
