Default WTB Newbie rifle

I humbly join this community excited to learn from your experience. My brother-in-law and I are trying to get into hunting. As neither of our fathers were hunters, we are figuring it out on our own. We are starting slowly, but have caught the hunting bug! We hunted the Oregon coast a couple years ago for Elk. We loved it, saw a couple cows and young, but no bulls.
Anyway, I am in need of a rifle. I will also be hunting deer this year, so a caliber that could cross-over decently would be ideal. We'll be in Oregon again and most likely rained on. Of course I have begun researching options, but the reality of cost of a new rifle is dis-heartening for a college student like myself. I am posting to see if any of you has a rifle that might be a good learner rifle. I have experience shooting, but have never shot an animal. Any help or guidance toward a used rifle is appreciated. Thank you.

skruffy, the following isn't my rifle, nor do I have any connection to the ad or the person, but it appears to be a good deal on what I would consider an entry level outfit. This is posted inthe classifieds under "guns":

In my opinion, a 30-06would bean ideal "crossover" rifle that you desire. With today's premium bullets being loaded in factory ammo, I would not hesitate to jump from a 150 grain deer load to a 180 grain elk load and go at it. Good luck.
