Default camera problem

My uncle has a sony handycam vision. It says SteadyShot CCD-TRV308 NTSC video Hi-8. Here's the problem: When you record on it you can hear sound, but the screen is black. We were videoing a turkey hunt and you could hear them gobbling and us calling and talking but you couldn't see anything. When you play a tape that has been recorded before you can see picture, so it isn't the screen. What would you suggest to do? I'm not a techy, but I didn't want to pay a bunch for a cheap walmart camera to be repaired. Thanks!
