The 20 should be fine. I like a 12 myself. I would use a stout load like Fiocchi "Golden Pheasant" or Winchester "Super Pheasant" loads.

20 gauges or lighter weight and smaller therefore can be easier to shoot at times. I know people who trap shoot with 20's and can outshoot me with my 12 and I think I'm an ok shooter. So yeah if you practice the 20 gauge should be a good gun for you.

I'm switching from a 12ga to 20ga also. For pheasants, 12ga was fine using light loads but for grouse it blew them apart. I recently bought a SKB 20ga O/U 28" barrels for all upland birds. Can't wait to shoot it.

I switched to a 20 Ga 7 years ago. I went from a 12 ga 870 express to a Ruger Red label 20 Ga. I have never regretted it. My son shot his first turkey with a 20 Ga stone dead. If a turkey can be killed with one so can a pheasant. Here is a photo of a limit of Geese and pheasants that I shot with my ruger.
