Default Single Shot Shotgun for hunting birds

What is your opinion on single shot shotguns for hunting birds?
I am interested in purchasing a single shot to hunt turkey, quail, goose. The weight, simplicity and price of single shot is unmatched. However i would like to hear some suggestions from experienced hunters.
Thanks.

My first shotgun was a 20 gauge single shot.

H&R Topper Junior Classic

Makes you a better shot, and they are very safe !

When I shoot 5 stand and sporting clays, I never take a second shot on singles (and always shoot low gun).

I never hear of ANY hunter getting a second shot on grouse..............LOL !

One shot one kill !!!

Back in earlier times most of us younger hunters started out with one old single shot shotgun or another. There were ( and still are ) a bunch of different guns around that almost every household had one or two sitting in the corner.

Anyway - I've always liked the single shot shotgun for it's light weight and simplicity, however - one doesn't get much of a choice with chokes, etc. My favorite model is a Savage, model 220 - which was a well made single shot shotgun ( takedown as well ), tang safety and no hammer to have to fool with. My Dad has a 410 version which I love to handle (and shoot) and I've been looking for a 20 gauge forever. I like to hunt grouse and a single shot with a hammer is not a good recipe for this style of hunting - my opinion only. Two shots are better, but a nice single shot makes you shoot better too.

Everything my great grampa shot with an old break-barrel 12 gauge that's hanging over my dad's fireplace. It was the first shotgun I ever shot (and I'll never forget the bruise it left on my shoulder) Back in the day there weren't pumps and semi-autos, and they killed birds then. It shouldn't be any different today.
The H&R/NEF line would be a way for you to go if you're looking for an economical single shot. The barrels switch out, so you could have a 28, 20, or 12 gauge wing gun, and then purchase a tight turkey barrel for spring gobblers. Or just get one barrel with a mod choke and plan on getting those turkeys in CLOSE Have fun. It will teach you to make that first shot count.

Yea i was looking into NEF single shot. I dont know about the quality but they offer a good price. I think im going to purchase the single shot due to the price issue and simplicity.

thanks for the advise

You might want to consider a Stoeger Condor double barrel instead of just a single shot. The 2nd shot, with a different choke tube, can be so much better than just a single barrel.

nice gun nevertheless out of my price range.
I already have the IZH-43K (double barrel, horizontal) Gorgeous gun.
However at the moment I am intersted in single shot or maybe pump.
Something practicall and inexpensive.
Prefferably a durable, practical and cheap.

Any suggestions for an inexpensive pump.

Mossberg pumps are fine guns and they are relatively inexpensive. The 500 is a baseline model, and they also offer a line called the Maverick. The Maverick 88 is a 'cheaper' model of the 500. I had one and had no problems out of it, and killed several turkeys, squirrels, ducks and geese with it. I think I gave $180 for it new. They are higher now I think. Every gun shop in the country has used Mossberg pumps for sale. Check there.

One gun comes to mind is the ithica featherlight. With quail, you'll generally find them in a covey and with grouse sometimes in a pair so the second shot is really nice. If you want to learn to one shot kill thingy, you can always use one shell.
