Default WI Grouse & Woodcock

Are doing suprising well. In 2.5 days two of us wuth three dogs pushed over 40 grouse and at least a 12 woodcock.

Surprising thing is we are finding grouse in hardwoods or the edge of hardwoods Balsam stands and not in the traditional popple/tag alder thickets.

Up here we have alot of beechnuts in the hardwoods that are keeping them there as well as mushrooms from all the rain we've had.. I have been seeing alot of woodcock earlier in the saplings left from woodcutting in some of those hardwood areas as well. Most of the woodcock have left this area now though..

Nice pics!! Not sure where you hunted here in WI but most folks that come up want to hunt the aspen cuts. They certainly contain birds, but grouse are still just birds that need to eat.Grew up hunting grouse here in the Park Falls area, have seen it all and my favorite areas are Red pine plantationswith scattered hardwood area's and aspen cuts. Swamp edges along balsam/hemlock stands and low meadows with cranberries and thornapples are second choice in dry years but don't seem to get much attention from hunters.
