Default Grouse hunting

So I was just 'up north' in northern WI for Christmas and did a little grouse hunting. But Im kind of a rookie and need some help.

Earlier in the fall I saw tons of birds. But now, i couldn't find one to save my life. What gives? Where should I be hunting in the winter and snow?

Keep an eye out in the tree tops such as birch and maple, in the evening and around small fur trees during most of the day..
