Default How do you release pheasant?

We do not have wild pheasant here, but you can purchase some to release and hunt. How do you take a pheasant and place him on the ground without him leaving the area or flying off?

I wrote an article how to do this and will get back to you as soon as I can find that file.

Is rather easy,

The cover is 24 to 36 inches tall but not so tall that the dog will never find the bird. We first kick a pocket into this tight cover using our foot. We then grab the bird"™s head and place the head under the wing to simulate a sleeping bird. We then hold the wing down tight against the body of the bird to help keep the bird"™s head in the sleeping position. We then shake the bird up and down using both hands in a rather hard rocking motion and place the bird into the cover pocket laying the bird down on its side with wing/head side down. While holding the bird down with one hand to the ground, I take a few feathers out of the bird"™s hind quarter with the other gloved hand and toss them around the cover I am using. Why you may ask again? It is to again give a bigger scent mark. Okay the feathers are all in place now what? Well, once you have the bird"™s head that is under the wing pinned on the ground you reach with your other gloved hand that is not holding the bird and grab both legs holding just above the feet of the bird. Now pull the legs straight back towards the tail. Pull hard for about 10 seconds - straighten those legs out. Once done, gently loosen your grip on your leg hold. If done correctly the legs will stay where you have left them almost straight back. If the bird tries to pull its legs back under itself when you try to let go, you have to pull again harder and a little longer. Okay the legs stay put. Gently loosen you hold over the top of the bird with your other hand try to close your brush pocket down over the bird and back quietly away immediately towards our main path watching the area you have just left the bird. Pheasants planted this way will stay in the area up to 10 minutes or more. Usually they will wake up within a few minutes and move off a short distance but we have chosen the ideal cover the bird will not go to far.

You may loose a few until you get that method down. It does put the bird to sleep so to speak.

For quail all I do is rock the bird until the head is wobbly and toss it hard into cover 10 to 14 inches tall. Hot days I look for shady sides of cover. When I toss I try to bowl the bird into the cover leaving a big scent cone. If it does fly away it won't go far and I will put another bird there immediately.

For chukar all I do is hold the legs of the bird find my ideal cover and circle the bird head down while hilding the legs tyring to get the bird to flap out - use it wings and try to fly. That way again I am leaving a good scent in that area. I will then drop the bird head first and back away. I have yet to have one fly away.

Thanks for the info, sounds like it is a little more involved than releasing bobwhites, but at $10+ a bird you really dont wont them to leave.

At the hunting lodge I work at, we squeeze a pheasants neck about half way down to the body and wait for the head to droop and then go out into the cover and give them a toss and make them tumble on the ground, then run for the pickup before the wake up. It only take a few seconds for them to wake up after you let go of their necks. We VERY seldom ever find a dead bird form doing that.

Or you can drive a pickup through the field about 20mph and hold a pheasant upside down, holding on to the breast of the bird, and as you are driving, chuck the bird into the ground as hard as you can. It very seldom hurts the bird and if you do it right, they won't fly off. The pickup is usually far enough away by the time they finish their tumble that they don't spook and fly off.

I just rock them to sleep with it's head under it's wing, I kick a pocket in the grass while rocking the bird to sleep to lay it in. Before I let go I will lay a little grass over it and back away. That works for me...

My cousin is the stocks pheasent for the local sportsman club and i help him some times, and its very simple theres a huge cage pen filled with pheasent, you catch the pheasent in the pen with a net, put them into a wood box with a lid on it, and when you get to the location that you want to release the pheasent you open the lid and they fly out.....they almost always stay within 100 yards of the area that you released them in.

I also raise pheasants and release up here. When I open the lid they fly out around 400 yards or so. I have only been lucky enough to see 1 of them every once in a while doing it that way. When you dizzy them and let them loose they will stay around the area unless spooked.. Here is a couple of the pheasants that I have raised..
