Default Training new pup need pigeons

I have a Drahthaar that I am training and I need some pigeons. I used them when training my last dog and it worked well. I am having a difficult time locating some. Does anyone know where I could get some? Perferably in Northern IL or Southern WI?

Hey,
I know of a place in Il. that sales Hunns. they work great for dog training and recall real good.
AG Supply sales a pigeon trap that works good too. if you have the time and can find a place to trap them

Here are my main two sources for pigeons....

Nearest barn
Poultry Auction

Living in Amish country is a bonus. We have a local auction and sale every wednesday and there are always 10-20 crates of pigeons. And there are usually 50-100 pigeons per crate. Another way to get pigeons is find a local farmer or maybe your own barn. Wait till night when they are roosting. And take a fishing net and snatch em. Wait till later in the year when they dont have any chicks though.
Good Luck

Jeff Rice out of Burlington Wisconsin has ducks, quail & chukar.

If you are willing to drive to Lomira, WIsc the Kettle Moraine Chapter of NAVHDA has all the birds you need on their training grounds once you are a member. The grounds are open to training and they have ducks, pheasants, quail, chukar & pigeons on the ground for you to purchase and then the area to train. Go to NAVHDA.org to the chapter contact page and you will find a Kettle Moraine Chapter contact there.

Or look for a homing pigeon breeder and they at times have ferral pigeons.

Check with local bird dog clubs they usually have a line on folks who trap pigeons. There are a couple of spaniel clubs up your way and we use pigeons for training. If not we've had to trap our own before. Not fun but when you need birds and can't get them.
You also might try local gun clubs. Sometimes they may know of someone who traps for pigeon shoots.

Contact USDA Wildlife Services in your state. They do a lot of pigeon trapping in cities this time of year and they aren't allowed to sell them, but they can give them away. You might be able to get'em for free.
