What breed of dog do you grouse hunters hunt with?
I want to know what breed of dog that you grouse hunters use, whyyou prefer that breed, pros and cons, and any other info you wish to share.
I hunt a female Labrador Retriever since I was 13 and have had excellent success. I trained her myself and have hunted every year with her and am proud of her. The past to two seasons she has flushed no less than 100 birds each season. She is 9 now and I am looking for another dog to eventually replace her. Looking at getting another lab. Just want to see what most hunters are using for ruffed grouse.
So put in you input about your dog or what breed you think is the best for grouse. Thanks for the feed back,
Ryan

I hunt grouse with my Irish Setters and love every minute of it. They were once very famous for there hunting ability and the show ruined some and even now the sportsman has their fingers in it by making a red setter so I guess a good hunting Irish is hard to beat.

English setter!!! I don't grouse hunt but love it on pheasants. Mine finds at least a hundred birds each season.
I can't say enough good things about mine so I'll leave it at that.

For public land birds, imo you need either a close working dog, or a very smart well trained dog that does not bump birds. So brittanys, setters, pointers etc. could all work depending on the dog. For example one probably wouldnt want a hard running english pointer (Southern quail style) that covers tons of ground quickly. I dont feel wild public birds will hold for minutes at a time.
