i have a slate called (i think thats what its called anyways, the one where you rub the stick on the thing). Well anyways, i can't get it to make any noise, can some one explain the technique to do it?
for a yelp, make a candy cane, or a j shape on it..........half moon, it'll all work get that down first....hate to ask, but did you rough your call up first? i know it doesnt really matter on slate like it would a crystal or glass call, but it still needs it......

Is it made of slate or glass/crystal? If it's slate, take a scratch pad and scratch it up a little. If it's glass or crystal, it'll take a little more elbow grease with rough sandpaper or a diamond pad. You've got to get the top surface roughed up by cutting into the surface. To make yelps, try making small ovals on the surface with the striker at about a 60-75 degree angle with the tip pointed toward you. The other thing you need to do is rough up the striker tip with some sandpaper so that it can get a grip on the surface.

I guess our messages crossed in space. I need to type faster. Hopefully it'll all get worked out. Conditioning a call isn't a science, but there is a right way to do it. Maybe it is the striker. I know when I make a striker it takes a little bit of work to get the tip conditioned to work good. Especially harder woods.
