Well, I guess I gotta tell someone my story right!
I have already killed one bird and I still have one more season to go, anyway-- A couple weeks ago I took a friend of mine on his first turkey hunt and we set up and scored. Very fun day. Well, Saturday I take my dad after his first bird. We set up on a couple roosted birds with very little action after flydown. So I decide to do a little run and gun. We move about 150 yrds and set up to call. I decide after not hearing anything to call aggressive. As I'm calling I hear something moving so I start purring. Within seconds, A huge coyote comes running down the hill right at my decoys. My dad lines him up and shoots. Wasn't a turkey but we probably just saved part of the turkey population. We let eveything settle down for a while, move another 200yrds and call. A gobble erupts between us and the truck. The bird is about 100yrds away. We quickly setup. As soon as I take a seat I let out a soft yelp. Instantly 2 birds gobble about 50 yrds directly behind us. Just great. The actually fly across the creek and end up about 15 yrds behind us. They eventually just wandered off. I talk dad into trying to set up in front of them. After an hour of this with no luck we decide to head towards the truck. As we get closer I call-instant answer. But, he sound like he is across the road. As we sneak to the last hill, we see the gobbler on top of the next hill. He's in the old cemetery strutn' and gobblin'. This bird was really worked up. We set up and I call. He comes all 100yrds in full strut, right down the center of the old dead end dirt road. I bet he gobbled 100 times in 5 min. He stops at fifteen yrds, and dad shoots. The bird drops instantly. We did it. My dad's first bird. It was 24 lbs, 10 inch beard, with 1 inch spurs. My 50 yr old dad instantly turned into a 10 year old boy. It was an experiance I'll never forget. My dad helped me get my first deer, I was able to return the favor on his first turkey 14 years later.
thanks for reading and good luck to everyone.
