Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Do you mix clucks with purrs or just do one or the other?

When you get one fairly close and want to entice him into range, I was thinking I'd likely do some purrs, separated by a cluck or two. Do hens do this, or simply purr with no clucking? Also, which of the two, or what combination (eg. more clucking, some purrs or the other way around) is best to do to get one in range?

Thanks

A real hen mixes lots of different calls together. I have had good succes with yelps purrs clucks and cutts all mixed together.

Hens mix clucks and purrs together a lot. You can mix it up a quite a bit.

Doug,

I have found, particularly here in the Northeast with Easterns, that the volume and cadence of the call is much more important than which type of call.

If he's close and just outside of range, try cupping your mouth and turning your head (to throw the direction of the vocalization behind you), and just call very softly. Nothing irritates a tom more than to be courted by a lady, make an appearance, just to get stoodup on her doorstep [8D]

But in seriousness to your question, I frequently mix purrs with clucks to get the gobbler's attention. Once they're at the edge of the range, I usually only purr with some leaf raking.

i had this happen last weekend, i was out scouting/learning the calls, i got him in about 25 yrds, but i wanted to experiment a bit, i started doing a little purring, mixed with some leaf roughling, brought him in 15yrds [8D], my season is in 2 weeks, hope i can do it again, and by the way, the tom had no idea i was there, he didn't leave spooked or ne thing, another hen called him off after that

I mix clucks with purrs, usually.

I've had multiple hens close this year, and all of them except maybe one has purred and clucked. The other one just clucked.

But I usually mix em together, don't think it hurts anything.
